Murfreesboro, Tennessee
December 18, 1864
Dear Parents,
I am well and hope you all are. We have been 20 days here now. We are out of candles and I am writing by the light of a fire place. Capt. Henderson is sick and [Sgt.] Chester Hatch.¹ I have got command of the company. We have been fighting here about every other day. ² The hospitals are full of wounded. The roads are very muddy.
We leave here at 9 o’clock tomorrow morning and move out 2 miles to a new camp. I have got the box you sent me.
I will have to close hoping you are all well. I will write as soon as we get in camp. So good bye.
— C. J. Fox, Jr.
¹ Chester Hatch Enlisted in Company G of the Reorganized Fourth Michigan Infantry on September 7, 1864, for 3 years. Promoted to Sergeant on October 8, 1864. Discharged on April 7, 1866, at Detroit, Michigan.
² Fox is referring to a series of engagements between Sherman’s army and Hood’s army in the vicinity of Nashville and Murfreesboro.
